Describe the social organization of the Mijikenda during the pre-colonial period.

- Family was the smallest social unit. Several families that claimed a common ancestry formed a large social unit called the clan.
- Boys and girls were circumcised at puberty. After initiation girls and boys were taught the values, customs and traditions of the community. Boys joined the age sets.
