Describe the socio-political organization of the Borana.

- Family was an important-social unit several families formed a clan. They believed in extended families.
- They lived in groups with a senior married man as the head called ‘Abba Olla’. - They had age set structure called Gada.
- The head of the Gada was called ‘Abba Koku’
- They had two kinship groups called Gonna and Sabba. Marriage from the same kinship was prohibited. Head of kinship was called kailu.
- There was division of labour based on gender. Men defended the camps, herds and shrines while women did domestic work and built houses.
- They worshiped one Cod called Wak/Waq.
- They had social ceremonies marked by song and dances
- Politically the Borana had a decentralized system based on kinship. The Borana society was divided into two halves/kinships called moieties each under a leader called Kallu.
- The Kallu camp was the center of spiritual and political activities of the moiety.
- The Kallu conducted religious ceremonies and also judged inter-clan conflict.
- The age set council recruited the warriors. The Gada council was called Lallaba.
