' Availability of water since most of these early urban centres were developed near
water sources to ensure adequate supply of water for domestic use and irrigation.
- Religious centers attracted population concentration leading to development of
urban centres.
- Harbours and ports where ships stopped/ anchored to replenish their supplies
developed to become towns of Cartage in Tunisia.
- Major trade routes led to development of towns e.g. The Trans-Saharan trade routes were later developed into roads. The growth of small scale industries/cottage industries
led to the growth of urban centres where such industries were located e.g.

- Commercial activities such as trade many people converged in such places as

side.
