- Freedom of speech, debate and enquiry. They are important as they open
debate among citizens and people can express their views without fear.
- Participation of the people in their government through free, fair and regular
elections.
-An open and accountable mass media. It is important to know the people behind
the media and their agenda.
- Economic democracy which ensures that individuals/ communities are economically empowered
and are provided with means of creating and controlling their own wealth.
- Equality before the law judgments should be made only according to the law
and that each citizen has an equal right to seek and receive justice.
- Political tolerance. Divergent views expressed by different people should be
considered while making important decisions.
- Control of abuse of power. Citizens prevent their representatives from
misusing power e.g. through corruption.
- Transparency. Citizens should be informed of what is happening in their government through public meetings.
- Balance of power between the governors and the governed. Citizens should obey the law without feeling that their rights are being curtailed/infringed on.
- Patriotism whereby citizens feel o be part and parcel of the government and the welfare of the government is their own welfare.
