Explain the causes of the mixed reaction among the Agikuyu as Kenya was being colonized in the 19th century.

- The Agikuyu were a decentralized society and this enabled the British to tackle one group at a time.
- Some leaders wanted to get wealth and prestige out of their cooperation with European e.g. Karuri wa Gakure.
- They needed protection from their traditional enemies and therefore sought for British help.
- Those who had earlier resisted like Waiyaki wa Hinga were defeated disastrously and this
made others to collaborate so as not to face the same tale like Waiyaki wa Hinga.
- Massive land alienation of Agikuyu land by the British provoked them into resistance.
- The British disregarded some Agikuyu customs and traditions especially the missionaries who were against female circumcision.
- The Agikuyu were angered by the conduct of IBEAC officials oflooting, killing and even raping Agikuyu women at will.
