Describe the problems which undermined the activities of nationalists in Mozambique.

- Mozambique was colonized by Portugal a power that was very poor and needed to keep its hold on her colonies to enable her economic growth/ Mozambique was an important source of revenue for Portugal.
- Mozambique had many settlers who had invested heavily and were reluctant to leave behind their heavy investment in Mozambique.
- Mozambique was an important market for Portuguese products therefore, Portugal was unwilling to let it go easily.
- The support which the Portuguese colonial government got from South Africa where they obtained cranium which they used in making bombs that were used to suppress African independence riots.
- Mozambique was geographically big and had very poor infrastructure.
This hampered the fast movement of people and goods.
- Mozambique suffered the worst kind of exploitation and repression / vigorous censorship and surveillance by security forces which discouraged the emergence of nationalism.
- The Portuguese practiced racism out of fear that if they educated Africans and gave them equal status, the Africans would outnumber them and throw them out.
