Explain the challenges facing the non-aligned movement.
Answer:
- Border disputes-there are many border disputes among the members e.g. Somalia had border claims against Ethiopia and Kenya.
- Political instability-civil wars and military coups have been a major problem and has affected the performance of the movement.
- Poverty of member states-majority of the major states are still dependent on their former colonial masters making it difficult to pursue independent policies.
- Economic constraints of some member states has made it difficult for them to remit their contribution to the movement.
- Poor coordination of NAM activities occasioned by the fact that the movement does
not have a secretariat to coordinate its activities (it does not have executive authority).
- Personality difference among the leaders of the member states which bars the leaders from holding any fruitful discussion.
