- Truncation file-it is temporary file that is used to hold input data during processing. It is used to update semi-permanent data on master file.
- Reference file-it contain file that is required during processing. It is used for look-up or reference purpose.
- Sort file-it is created from existing transaction or master files. It is used to alter the sequence of the existing files for faster access.
- Back up files-it is a copy of a data file kept in case the original is damaged, lost or cannot be accessed. Used to supplement data in other files in case of loss.
- Report file-it a file that contains records filtered from a master file. It is used for preparing summary that can be printed later.
