Explain the challenges encountered by the Organization of African Unity.

- Balkanization of Africa where by the continent was divided into colonial territories leading to different grouping which left negative legacy which led to the fight in order to forge closer ties among members states.
- Personality differences in some countries since some heads of states were never in agreement and proved difficult to reconcile.
- Membership to the organization was voluntary making it easy for members to withdraw
at will.
- Military coups-African leaders were often overthrown in military coups which interrupted the O.A.U’s plans and programmes.
- Lack of military force of its own. OAU lacked a permanent continental military to enforce and maintain peace.
