An experiment was carried out to investigate the rate of reaction shown below.
Sucrose -> Fructose + Glucose
For the products fructose and glucose to be formed, it was found that substances K was to be added and the temperature maintained at #37^0C#. when another substance L was added, the
reaction slowed down and eventually stopped.
(a) Suggest the identity of substances K and L.
(b) Other than temperature, state three ways by which the rate of reaction could be increased.
(c) Explain how substance L slowed down the reaction.
Answer:
a)K-Enzymes (Sucrase, Intervase), L-Inhibitor/enzyme inhibitor or an acid.
b)Rate of reaction could be increased by:
-Addition of sucrose/substrate and enzyme
c)-L competes with substrate for active site of enzymes K
-L made the medium acidic hence unsuitable for enzymes activity
-L occupies permanently with active sites of enzymes
