How is the human female reproductive system adapted/ suited to its function?
Answer:
-Ovary; has secretory cells to secrete female sex hormones e.g. oestrogen and progesterone; it has a germinal epithelium which produces the egg/ ova;
-Fallopian tube; is funnel shaped to receive the ovum after ovulation; it has cilia to waft/ move the ovum towards the uterus/ womb; it has smooth muscles which contract and relax to facilitate movement of the ovum to the uterus;
-Womb/ uterus; it has muscular walls/ myometrium; to facilitate parturition; the endometrium is highly vascularized/ well supplied with blood capillaries to facilitate implantation;
-Cervix; has muscular ring which close to keep the fetus in the womb; secretes a plug of mucus which prevents the entry of pathogens;
-Vagina/ birth canal; tubular/ hollow to allow passage of fetus during parturition; walls have vestibular glands which secrets mucus; for lubrication during copulation; (when the female is sexually excited).
