Explain three factors that influence the occurrence of surface run-off
Answer:
-Amount of water or nature of rainfall: there should be sufficient rainfall to make
soil saturated in order to allow the excess water to flow on the surface or intense rainfall accelerates the rate of surface run off.
-Gradient of the land: the gradient of the slope should be steep to allow flow of water by gravity
-Nature of rocks or soils: the rocks or soil should be impermeable to allow for
limited infiltration and percolation for excess water to form surface run-off
-Vegetation:Absence of vegetation will increase the rate of surface run-off
-Water table or level of saturation: the water table should be high to reduce
infiltration and allow surface run-off.
-Human activities: Construction of pavements or roads in built up areas prevent infiltration and arouse surface run-off
