Describe three processes involved in marine erosion.
Answer:
- Hydraulic action-breaking waves or swash hit against the cliff shattering the rock. The force of the breaking waves compresses air into the cracks or joints in the cliff face. This enlarges the cracks and part of the rock break off.
- Abrasion or corrosion-the rock fragment carried by the waves are used as a tool to erode the cliff as the waves break at the cliff face. The material or load carried by the backwash erodes the sea-floor.
- Attrition-the wearing down of particles or loads as they continuously hit
against each other and coastal rocks or cliff, thus, reducing in size.
- Solution action or corrosion-the solvent and chemical action weakens and removes the minerals found in the cliff and sea-floor where there are limestone rocks/dolomite or chalk.
